A couple of years ago, when I discovered that there is such a profession, I knew that this might be something right for me. Why? Because it allows me to help animals by combining my dream “jobs”: animal behaviour expert, detective and scientist.

Animal behaviour expert: There is no need to explain why a behavioural consultant needs to understand animal behaviour, learning principles and needs. Since I was a child, I loved learning about animal behaviour and cognition. Now I can develop this passion further, learn even more and use my knowledge to help pets and their people.

Detective: Since I can remember, I thought being a detective was a cool job. Looking for clues, connecting the dots, solving mysteries. I kind of wanted to be one, but it’s a dangerous job, so not a path I ever seriously considered. But now I can do a detective’s work. To be able to change animal behaviour, it’s important to understand the reason for the behaviour. A behavioural consultant collects clues: statements from the pet’s caregivers, medical records, video footage, photos and more, to learn what the animal’s motivation for a given behaviour is. Are their specific needs not met, are they afraid of something, are they in pain, etc.? Knowing that allows for developing a more effective behaviour modification plan.

Scientist: When all the clues are collected and a hypothesis is stated on what the motivations are behind the behaviour, it’s time to test that. I prepare a behaviour modification plan that includes changes in the environment and handling, enrichment and/or training. The better the detective work was, the more chances that the plan would work. But sometimes there is not enough data at first and some therapies that work for most animals don’t work for a specific individual. So, we test a given approach, collect more data, but are open to adjusting the plan if there is no progress. It’s like in science: ideas are tested to understand the world and find solutions to a problem. In the past, I worked as a researcher on fundamental questions in biology. Now I can use my skills to solve animal and people’s problems.
